A signed path winds its way directly from the farmhouse through
hills with views opening across the magical city of Orvieto.
Medieval castles, monasteries and villages line the path crossing
the wooded landscape dotted with natural springs and lakes.
The pathway, also scattered with Etruscan and Roman archaeological
sites, takes you to Orvieto in about four hours.
This photo shows the panoramic view of Orvieto seen at the
final leg of the walk before reaching the farmhouse at Sossogna.
In the summer of 2003, a viewing platform on the volcanic
rock on the left (a smaller version of the volcanic outcrop
on which Orvieto is perched) boasting panoramic views from
which you can see Etruscan ruins and remains of medieval wells
and the old castle, was opened to the public.
With Orvieto in the background you can see views of the
rugged landscape and nature reserve of mount Peglia and go
for long walks. We have a range of walking maps of the local
area and further afield available at the farmhouse.

The medieval town of Rocca Ripesena is situated at the foot
of the mountain, about a kilometre from the farmhouse at Sossogna.

The many medieval villages and towns in the area are home
to artisans who today keep traditional arts and crafts alive.

Many of Umbria's renowned art cities, including Todi (40
kms), Assisi (80 kms) and Perugia (70 kms), are a short journey
away.
Easy to get to are Tuscan jewels including Pitigliano (50
kms), Saturnia known for its thermal sulphur hotsprings and
the Tirrenian sea (80 kms) and Lazio's Lake Bolsena (20 kms),
Bagnoreggio (30 kms), Viterbo (40 kms), and Rome (100 kms).
Travelling by train to Rome is a convenient way of getting
there: Cars can be parked in the car park at Orvieto Station,
the journey to Termini Station takes at the most one hour,
and from there you can take the metro to all the famous landmarks.
